Configure The QoS (Quality Of Service) Settings

You need to test and record your actual Internet connection speed, so that the QoS (quality of service) is configured correctly.

The QoS functionality of the server uses traffic shaping techniques to improve the user experience. Using packet prioritization we allow user traffic to be sent ahead of any backend system data. The most important example of this is Cloud Backup. QoS allows us to run the Cloud Backup 24/7, by giving the backup data traffic a lower priority than the end users data traffic. The Cloud Backup will try to use all available bandwidth, but QoS allows this to happen without affecting the end user experience.

It is important to make sure you know exactly what speed your ISP is providing you, not what they say you should have. (There is often a big difference in what your ISP claims to provide, versus what speeds you actually get.)

To find your average internet connection speed we suggest you run a test from various Speed Test web sites, such as:

http://www.speedtest.net/

http://speedof.me/

http://www.bandwidthplace.com/

You need to run these tests on a computer plugged directly into your router/internet connection. It is essential that you don't run these tests from a computer on the LAN, as there are default QoS settings in place which will skew the results.

The best time to run these tests is out of hours when no one else is using the network. If other users or systems are using the internet connection you will get a lower value of available bandwidth.

 

Step 1: Run a speedtest

You need to run a speedtest to find out the Upload and Download speed of your Internet connection in Kbit/s.

Plug a computer directly into your router/firewall/internet connection (not your Easy Connect server), and test you have Internet connectivity.

Go to www.speedtest.net (or any speedtest site) and run a speed test.

Make a note of the Download and Upload speeds in Kbit/s.

If your results are in Mbit/s, you need to convert them to Kbit/s by simply multiplying by 1000. Eg if your Download speed is 50 Mbit/s, and Upload is 10 Mbit/s multiply this by 1000 to get Kbit/s.

  • Download Speed: 50 Mbit/s x 1000 = 50000 Kbit/s
  • Upload Speed: 10 Mbit/s x 1000 = 10000 Kbit/s

Step 2: Calculate 90% of your download and upload speeds

You need to calculate 90% of your line speed and record that, to cope with fluctuations in your line speed.

Once you have an upload and download internet connection speed in Kbit/s, multiply it by 0.9 to get a 90% value, e.g.:

You run a speed test and your download speed is 50 Mbit/s (50000 Kbit/s) and upload speed is 10 Mbit/s (10000 Kbit/s). Multiply the Kbit/s values by 0.9 to get 90% as shown below:

  • Download Speed: 50000 x 0.9 = 45000
  • Upload Speed: 10000 x 0.9 = 9000

You need to enter these values (90% of your upload and download speed in Kbit/s) into the Commissioning Console as described below.

Step 3: Access Commissioning Console

Connect to the Management VPN, and then access the Commissioning Console at http://commission.prolianteasyconnect.com

 

Step 4: Enter in your 90% Internet connection speeds

From within the Commissioning Console, click on the Wide Area Network tab.

Enter in the Upload and Download speeds which you calculated above (90% of your Upload and Download speeds in Kbit/s)

 

Step 5: Save

Click Save
