Disaster Recovery instructions

Disaster recovery (or DR) is the process of restoring a server to its normal operating state after a disaster. 

(A disaster is an event which destroys or damages beyond repair a server or renders it inaccessible indefinitely. Examples of disasters include theft, flood or fire.)

If you have requested to invoke a Disaster Recovery of your server in the cloud, the Support team will restore your Virtual Machines into the cloud for you to access. Once they have been restored, you will be able to access the virtual machines over a VPN.

Below are instructions on how to access your servers after they have been restored in the cloud.

Step 1. Setup the VPN

The Support Team will email you a link to the VPN access server where you can download your VPN client and configuration.

Go to the link in a web browser, and login using your domain username and password. Make sure you select the option to Login as highlighted in the below screenshot.

Once logged in, you can download your VPN config file.

If you have not got the OpenVPN client installed on your computer, you can download a pre-configured OpenVPN client installer by clicking on the link relevant to your operating system.

If you have already got the OpenVPN client installed on your computer, download just the VPN profile by clicking on the link Yourself (user-locked-profile)

 

Install the OpenVPN client on your computer by running the installer file you downloaded. If you need help doing this there are instructions here.

If you already have the OpenVPN client installed on your computer, import the VPN profile into the VPN client.

 

Step 2: Connect to the VPN

Once the OpenVPN client is installed, connect via VPN and you will have network access to your restored Virtual Machines in the cloud.

Step 3: Access your file server

Once connected to the VPN, you will have full network access to the restored file server and its data. The file server (zfilemgr2) has the same IP address and name as when it was running on your server. You can access the file server using their normal DNS name or IP address.

To access your file server you can simply browse to \\zfilemgr2-00.corp.domain.com (replacing corp.domain.com with your Active Directory name). When prompted for a username and password, just use your normal domain user account.

The username should be in the format of NetbiosName\username. E.g.  COMPANY\jsmith

Step 4: Access your virtual machines

Once connected to the VPN, you will have full network access to the restored Virtual Machines. You can access the virtual machines using their normal DNS name or IP address.

If you want to remote desktop into any of your Windows machines, just RDP to the standard IP address (you can get the IPs from the Commissioning Console). When prompted for a username and password, just use your normal domain user account.
